BPA Plaques Give Weight to ‘Power of Words’

“The Power of Words” will help set the tone at the Lower School this year thanks to the generosity of the Brunswick Parents’ Association.

Designed to dovetail with the Brunswick character initiative known as The Brunswick Trust, “The Power of Words” theme will see Lower School students carefully “unpack” a series of 18 words selected for their unique strength.

Thanks to the BPA, each of the 18 words has been carved carefully into 18 bronze plaques, which were recently delivered to the Lower School.

The School kicked off the year by considering the word “Greetings!” The word served as a fitting way to open the year as the community considered everything from the history of the handshake at Brunswick to the idea of looking people in the eyes when you speak to them.

Other words to be “unpacked” this year include Resilience, Kindness, Teamwork, Leadership, Curiosity, and Humility.

The plaques are not yet hung. The idea is for the boys to hold each plaque as they consider the words, to feel their weight, and to run their fingers over the letters. Then, in the spring, the boys will determine where in the school each particular word should hang.

“It’s a home run,” said Lower School Head Katie Signer. “I think that’s what we’ve got here.”
