Brunswick Faculty Institute

By fostering collaboration, encouraging introspection, and sustaining growth in teaching, the Brunswick Faculty Institute provides a cohesive, year-long, process-oriented professional development experience that seeks to support, motivate, and inspire our educators.
In the words of Head of School Tom Philip, “The Faculty Institute will be truly unique to Brunswick. We’re so proud of our faculty. We need to make sure we build into their cycle of experience opportunities for updating and renewing enthusiasm for their craft…”

As envisioned, the BFI is a year-long, in-house professional development program beginning at the start of the academic year and ending with a three-day intensive session the following June. The main purpose of this initiative is to provide an opportunity for teachers to meet as a community of educators in order to share ideas, to discuss issues involving "Teaching & Learning," and to engage in meaningful, relevant workshops. Ultimately, the BFI places teachers in a position to learn from each other. Also embedded in the program is the "BFI Lecture Series," which brings noted speakers from the field of education to campus to provide insight throughout the year.

From 2017 to 2020, the BFI ran its second cycle, working with academic departments on a focused, deep-dive into curriculum. In coordination with Department Chairs and the Assistant Head of School for Academics, each department worked to craft a goal-oriented process that incorporated prominent and prevailing trends in education.

  • 2017-2018: Arts and English Departments
  • 2018-2019: Computer Science, Math, and Science Departments
  • 2019-2020: Classics, History, Social Sciences, and Modern Language Departments

During the 2020 school year, the Brunswick Faculty Institute partnered with the Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging Office to coordinate a year of presentations, training sessions, seminars, and discussions across all divisions and departments to increase understanding of multiculturalism, the history of racism in America, and anti-racist pedagogy.

All of Brunswick's coaches comprise the 2021-2022 BFI cohort. The Athletics Department is the school's largest, engaging with each boy during his time at Brunswick. The goals of the year are to increase sport-specific vertical alignment, as well as to provide coaches with opportunities to reflect and plan.
