On Colonial Day, a historical re-enactment that’s become a Lower School tradition during the past 25 years, 4th graders transformed themselves into 18th-century artisans, capping their study of early America.
The boys combine their research and writing skills with art and design technology in an interdisciplinary project that requires weeks of preparation and hard work.
By the end, Everett Gymnasium comes to resemble a New England village, circa 1764, showcasing just about every kind of craftsman of the era — from weavers to tailors, potters to blacksmiths, and many more.
Lower School Head Katie Signer is reminded of Colonial Day’s value each and every year.
“We, as a community, get to step back in time as our 4th graders come alive as craftsmen in storefronts they’ve worked so hard to create,” Signer said. “Hands on and interactive, Colonial Day represents creativity and collaboration at its best.
