The Bruins earned a well-fought 4-3 victory at home on Saturday afternoon against last season's New England champs, Hopkins.
It was a great day for tennis with the weather finally beginning to shape up. The team was in good spirits and exuding high and positive energy from the onset. Having lost to Hopkins in the semi-finals of the New England Championships last season, this was always going to be a battle. Both teams were missing one of their top 6, but good tennis would ensue nonetheless.
With Brunswick winning the first sets in all of the singles, and two of the doubles, the Bruins were off to a strong start. Juniors Caleb Zimmerman and Jack Sieg were the first to put points on the board with straight set wins.
Soon to follow, Hopkins tied the match up with wins at #2 and #3 doubles.
With the score tied at 2-2, sophomore, Sebastien Moullé-Berteaux completed a straight set victory at #3 singles to put Brunswick up 3-2 in matches.
The two remaining matches were battling to the wire. #2 Tucker MacLean was tied 1-1 going into a 3rd set tiebreaker. Concurrently, #1 doubles pairing Spencer Segura and Jamie McCutcheon were fighting to close out a tightly contested second set tied at 5-5. After Segura held serve to take a 6-5 lead, they would need to break serve for the match. Despite going down in the game, the pair fought back and took control of a well-played deuce point (no ads) to seal the win and clinch the match.
