Brunswick Crew opened its spring racing season at the St. Andrew’s Regatta with the 1st Varsity Eight taking third place in the highly competitive event.
After weather had caused the cancelation of the team’s season opener versus Salisbury School, the Bruins were itching to race. For the third year in a row, the team traveled to the famed Noxontown Pond to face off against top teams from New Jersey, Pennsylvania, D.C., and the hosts from St. Andrew’s (Delaware).
With the wind whipping across the course from Lane 1, Brunswick’s varsity coxswain Lucas Tan ’24 managed his crew (stroke Henry Andren ’24, George Kapp ’26, Reed Eddy ’25, Mark Kakoma ’24, Quinn Evans ’26, Phil Martone ’27, Jack McEntire ’25, and Charlie Sulkowski ’26) well from their position in Lane 3, but the crews in Lanes 1 & 2 (St. Alban’s and LaSalle) were too fast for Brunswick to keep up with on this day. But the Bruins were able to race hard through to the finish line and come in ahead of Central Catholic, Montclair, and St. Andrew’s.
The Brunswick 2nd and 3rd Varsity Eights both took 5th place in their events; the Bruins finished 4th in the JV 4+ event.
Looking ahead to the next race, Brunswick will host Deerfield Academy, the defending New England champions, on Saturday, April 20.
