Bruins Top Bears in JV Hockey Battle

In a battle of Bruins and Bears on Berkshire’s Olympic sheet, as Brunswick handed Berkshire its first loss on home ice in a 2-1 game on Saturday. 

It was a gutsy win with contributions from every player, and a stellar performance by James Cragin in net. 

Brunswick controlled possession for the majority of the first two periods, but couldn’t capitalize on opportunities around the Berkshire goaltender. The score was knotted at zero heading into the third.

Brunswick came out of the locker room buzzing, joined by Ryan Baxter who missed the first 30 minutes trying to find a skate sharpener to fix a lost edge. In the middle of the stanza, Baxter made a big play to win the puck in the neutral zone and passed it to Jack O’Connor for a shot, and senior captain Sebi DeAngelis put the rebound away for his first goal of the season – it was a big one.

Berkshire didn’t relent, and after calling a timeout with 2:19 left in the game, the Bears finally got one by Cragin with a two-post snap shot from the slot.

With just 1:46 left in a 1-1 game, Brunswick’s blue line of George Karayiannis, Charlie Stevens, and Ben Taylor came out flying, and Taylor buried one in the top right corner after a feed from Miller Yonce with just 31 to go.

Brunswick held strong from there.

Kudos to all six defensmen (Teddy Cooney, Miller Yonce, Luke Hublitz, Rhys Brooks, Luke Dougherty & Brooks Simonds) for helping to keep the front of Cragin’s crease clear all game. 

Teddy Cooney was approached by the Berkshire coaches after his outstanding performance on both ends of the ice. Cooney is now +7 over the last two contests, and he looks forward to continuing the run on Monday against Iona Prep at Hartong Rink – 5:15 p.m. puck drop.
