Brunswick rode opportunistic goal scoring, a hot power play, and rock-solid goaltending from senior Will Baker on the way to a 4-2 victory against Belmont Hill in the opening game of the Belmont Hill/Nichols Holiday Tournament outside of Boston on Thursday morning.
Through two periods, the Bruins had registered only seven shots on goal (to Belmont Hill's 18), but the visitors led 3-0 on two pretty power-play goals by senior co-captain Sean Gibbons and one end-to-end highlight-reel rush by senior alternate captain Cooper Cleaves (who also assisted on the two other tallies). Senior Brendan Giles also deserves a shoutout for an incredible backdoor pass on Gibbons' second, which came in the final minute of the middle stanza to give the Bruins a little breathing room.
'Wick played its best period in the third and held off a charge from the home team by adding one more PPG (100% -- 3 for 3 -- on the day) by Giles.
Baker ended up with 26 saves in another excellent performance.
Back at it Thursday night at 8 p.m. against Brewster Academy.
