Brunswick faced off against a very young and talented squad from Rivers School – coached by ex-NHLer Freddy Meyer – and emerged victorious by a score of 4-1 in the nightcap at the St. Sebastian's Tournament in Needham, Mass.
The Red Wings capitalized about eight minutes into the first half of action on a pretty 2-v-1 pass to the backdoor after a Brunswick turnover went the other way and led to the odd-man rush.
The Bruins, though, stayed the course and began to gain the territorial edge against their less experienced opponents – ultimately netting two consecutive goals on the power play. The first came off a nifty give-and-go between seniors Sean Gibbons and Brendan Giles and the second was scored by junior Tucker Spiess, who picked up some loose change in front and buried the go-ahead tally. 2-1 after 22:30.
Junior Oliver Czaja extended the Bruins' lead five minutes into the second, rifling a snapper through the legs of the Rivers netminder that found its way just over the goal line. Spiess and senior Ryan Wachtel picked up assists.
'Wick, now 3-1-2 on the season, killed off a few penalties down the stretch (seems to be a theme so far this year) and senior Cooper Cleaves iced it with an ENG.
Solid effort and a good start to the weekend.
St. Andrew's will be up next tomorrow in the 5 p.m. semi-final.
