It was an exciting game from start to finish in Dann Gym on Wednesday afternoon, but in the end, Brunswick lost a close one to Avon by a final of 54-47.
The Bruins defensive pressure forced the Winged Beavers into tough contested looks from outside for most of the first half, holding the oppositions offense at bay. Two Ethan Long three pointers sent the Bruins into break with a 25-19 advantage.
Brunswick’s hot shooting continued to start the second and the home team quickly built a 12-point lead. Avon would respond with a run of its own and evened the score with eight minutes to play.
It was anyone’s game down the stretch, but the same looks that Brunswick capitalized on earlier wouldn’t seem to fall as the seconds ticked away, forcing the Bruins to intentionally send the Winged Beavers to the free throw line, where they ultimately iced the game.
Long carried the load offensively with 22 points while Matty Augustine chipped in 12. Brunswick also received notable contributions from Lee Huffard and Brandon Jean, who were thrust into major roles.
The Bruins travel to Massachusetts this weekend to play Dexter Southfield on Friday and St. Paul’s on Saturday in the Class A Winter Classic.
