'Wick Squash Loses Nailbiter at Haverford

The varsity squash team fell 3-4 to host team, Haverford, on Saturday evening in a tooth-and-nail contest.

Brunswick knew that this match would come down to which players were on top of their game today, and Haverford was mentally prepared to defend their home court.

The match started with #s 3, 5, 7.

Thomas Carney was the first one to secure a point for the Bruins at #7, playing some clinical squash and keeping his opponent at bay.

Meanwhile, at #3 and #5, Velasco was in a tight 5-gamer, and Newton was facing a relentless opponent who was making very few errors. Newton would eventually succumb in straight games, and Velasco would fall in the fifth game after a 55-minute barnburner. Haverford led 2-1 after the first round of matches.

Cole Cline and Henry Raine were favored to secure victory at the #6 and #4 spots and earned their wins with disciplined, structured rallies.

Brunswick led 3-2 with the #1 and #2 left to play.

Hodgson at #1 had a tough battle ahead against one of the top ranked juniors in the country. His opponent was not giving away any free points and was retrieving almost anything that Hodgson would throw at him.

Despite a gallant effort, Hodgson would go down 0-3, leaving it all up to the #2s, who were having am immense battle of their own.

After dropping the first game 13-11, Newman would fire back with a quick 11-2 in the second to even the score. At this point all eyes were on the #2 players, who were giving it their all in what would become a crucial one. Both players saved a couple game balls until Newman's opponent took it home 13-11, and rode that momentum into the 4th to close out the match for Haverford.

A very close match as is always the case. But the team now switches its gaze to Saint Andrew's on Sunday morning.
