Wrestlers Win Season Opener

Brunswick opened its wrestling season with a dual meet win at Avon Old Farms. Despite missing several starters from the varsity lineup, the Bruins showed their team depth and came away with a resounding 63-14 victory over the Winged Beavers.

 

After a one-year hiatus from the mat, co-captain Kyle Pagnani '24 started his team off with a second period pin at 157 lb. Co-captain Whip Gorman '24 followed with a quick pin at 165 lb., and wrestling up at 175 lb., returning All-New England wrestler Jack Degl '25 also earned a first period fall.

 

First-year wrestler MJ Maraglino '27 bumped up a weight class against an All-New England 190 lb. wrestler from AOF. Maraglino did not concede a pin, eventually losing by technical fall.

 

In the upper weights, at 215 lb., Declan Murray '25 was dominant in earning a second period pin. Brunswick had to forfeit the 285 lb. weight class.

 

In the lower weights, Owen Bartoszek '27 earned a win against an experienced opponent at 106 lb., followed by a forfeit for returning All-New England wrestler Christian Yanoti '25 at 113 lb.

 

At 120 lb., Michael Ligouri '27 eked out a 7-5 win in his first varsity match. Also making his debut in a Brunswick singlet, Marco Sethi '27 earned a first period pin at 126 lb. Co-captain and returning All-New England wrestler Michael Accetta '24 pinned quickly at 132 lb., as did Ethan Phelps '26 at 138 lb and Alec Harned '26 at 144 lb.

 

While Asher Benn '24 lost a 10-4 decision at 144 lb., he also wrestled an opponent from the American School for the Deaf and earned an 18-12 win by decision.

 

Brunswick (1-0) will travel back to Avon for the Holiday Duals on Saturday, December 9, while the Varsity B team will travel to the Skiff Mountain Scuffle at Marvelwood School.
