Brunswick and Loomis have played competitive, entertaining season openers for years – and Thursday night was no different, as the Pelicans outlasted the Bruins in what they call a barn-burner in the hockey world and skated away with a 7-4 victory in Windsor.
The Bruins trailed 2-0 after the first and at one point late in the second, the hosts had a 5-2 lead and looked to be pulling away for good. But this veteran-laden squad didn't quit and senior Brendan Giles' power-play goal with 2.4 seconds to play in the frame cut the deficit to one. 5-4 Loomis after two.
The positive mojo was short lived, however, as Loomis tallied early in the third to regain its two-goal advantage and would later add an empty netter to seal the 7-4 win.
Chances were aplenty for the visitors (shots were 35-29 in favor of the Brown and White) but it's nearly impossible to win in this league – or any league – when six go up on the board for the opponent. The coaches and boys will look at the tape and try to clean things up before the weekend ahead in Exeter, New Hampshire.
One highlight of note was sophomore Owen Gibbons' first-career goal (a breakaway finish through the five hole), which got the Bruins on the board after going down three in the second.
New Hampton next. Game time at the Exeter Invitational is set for 4pm on Saturday.
