Wick Wins FAA JV Tournament with Brilliant Team Performance

The boys played outstanding soccer and were able to recapture the title today, Saturday, bringing back home the trophy after a three-year hiatus. Wick JV1 has won 11 of the last 13 games and has been undefeated since September 27th.

The first game was against the host, Hopkins. We won 3-0, scoring two goals in the first half. The first goal started with Johnny Backx crossing a high floating ball into the box to find the head of Luke Martinez. The second goal was assisted by Luke Martinez, as he played a ball across the six to find John Guza for an easy finish. In the second half, Keane Zorub scored by finishing a ball rolling out of the eighteen. His shot hit the keeper’s hands, but as he juggled it, the ball rolled over the line.

Our second game was against the only team we have tied this season, Masters. Unfortunately, that was the only game which we were unable to pick up a full 3 points - this one ended in a tie as well. A tough opponent with a solid backline made it impossible to score. While we didn’t put one away, we had many good looks on goal.

Our third and final game of the round-robin was against St. Luke’s. We won this one 4-0, enough to put us ahead of Masters and into the Championship game. The first goal was assisted by Johnny Backx as he played a great ball to Blake Levy for a quick finish. The second goal was a solo effort from Max Stabinsky, who went 1v1 with his defender on the goal line and beat him, only to then hit a well-placed ball between the keeper and the near post. Our last goal of the first half came from Luke Martinez, when Alek Modi served him from the back, with a beautiful assist. The final goal of the game came after Reid Glanville followed up a shot which was fumbled by the keeper. Glanville was able to slide under the keeper’s attempt to re-collect the ball for a tap-in.

Our final game of the tournament was against GCDS, the winner of the second bracket. This game was kept much closer than it should have been by their goalkeeper. We won this one 1-0. Gianfranco Fajardo rarely ends up so deep in our offensive half. Still, he beat two defenders to take control of the goal line and played a perfectly weighted and rolling ball to Ben Taylor for an easy and much-celebrated goal.
