Back-And-Forth Game Ends in Draw

Friday’s match-up at Frederick Gunn was certainly not lacking in excitement — a muddy and sloppy pitch, two PKs, three lead changes in the last 30 minutes, and two goals in the last five minutes all culminated in a 3-3 draw between the hosts and Brunswick. 

FG opened the scoring in the 37th minute, drawing a foul just inside the 18-yard-box and converting the ensuing try from the penalty stripe past senior GK Phil Stabinsky.

Down one going into the half, a change in personnel and formation provided a spark and generated more scoring opportunities for the Bruins. Just four minutes into the second half, a well-placed corner kick from junior defender Whim Nook was knocked around the six-yard-box and ultimately handed by a Gunn defender; striker Kieran Raker ’24 confidently took the resulting PK and evened the score.

The Bruins claimed the lead in the 63rd minute: midfielder Theo Perkins ’25 came off the bench and his first two touches on the ball were taking space down the right side and then a cross toward goal, which Raker slid off the right post and into the net.

Credit to the hosts for putting pressure on ’Wick’s defensive line through the final whistle, as a series of breakdowns led to Gunn goals in the 82nd and 85th minutes.   

Brunswick mounted a composed effort to even the score. Drawing a foul just past midfield, junior striker Patrick O’Donohue sent a long free kick toward goal, which Perkins was able to connect with and send home to even the score at three apiece.

Despite all the action on the pitch, Stabinsky’s day in net was pretty quiet. He made four saves, two coming in big moments in the second half to deflect a shot away to his right and then another one in a crowd to keep the score at 2-1 in that moment.

Sitting at 7-9-1, the Bruins have one week left in their season — the home finale Wednesday night under the lights of Cosby Field and Saturday at Westminster.
