Bruins Drop Home Contest to Avon

Brunswick went up against another NEPSAC-playoff-caliber team on Wednesday evening, losing by a score of 4-1 to visiting Avon Old Farms.

The scoreline does not represent the effort put on by the Bruins. Aside from a few small mistakes and a few top-notch saves from the Avon goalkeeper, these two teams were pretty evenly matched.

Avon recorded its first two tallies in the 18th and 23rd minutes, the first coming on a corner kick and the second on a ball behind the ’Wick back-four that was converted in a 1-v-1 with senior goalkeeper Phil Stabinsky.

Down two, the Bruins responded with a series of attempts to even the score, as seniors Kieran Raker and Rowan Glanville both had quality tries on goal that required impressive goalkeeping from Avon's netminder to keep the home squad off the board.

Avon ultimately took a 3-0 lead into the half following a strike from 25 yards out that found the upper corner of the net.

The two tallies from the second half came in the opening and closing minutes of the frame, as Avon converted a cross in the 47th minute to open the half, while Brunswick finally got on the board in the 85th minute. Junior midfielder Agustin Grether drew a foul while attacking the Avon goal in its 18-yard box; while both Grether's penalty kick attempt and rebound were thwarted by the Avon GK, his ensuing corner kick was perfectly placed and found the back of the net.

In addition to those players mentioned above, midfielders Tyler Quake and Theo Perkins played solid minutes, alongside defenders Ollie Leonard and Johnny Saunders. At the corners of the defensive line were freshman Ray Foley and Justo Iraola, who both saw all 90 minutes of the match. Stabinsky had another decent showing, recording nine saves on another busy day for him in goal.

The team is hoping to get back on the winning side up at Frederick Gunn on Saturday.
