JV1 Soccer Falls in First Game of Season

Even though the scoreline ended 4-1 (unfortunately, not in our favor), we played the first 60 minutes as well as we ever have. Taft opened up the scoring in the first half, but 'Wick was able to respond quickly with one of our own. A thru ball was played to Ben Taylor running in behind a defender; with one move he beat the next defender and took a shot on goal, which was deflected to Kody Horton, who had the last touch on the ball before rolling over the goal line. The first half ended tied at one.

 

Another 20 minutes into the second half was the first time Taft had an opportunity on goal. A few missed clearances in our box off a corner kick were enough to allow a second Taft goal despite goalie Michael Attubato's extraordinary effort to deflect the first shot. The third goal came as their #10 turned in an open midfield to find enough space to hit a 30-yard screamer. The fourth came quickly thereafter in a fastbreak with a through pass behind our defensive line.

 

Ben Taylor had a player-of-the-game performance with multiple shots on goal (just unlucky), and great effort to put pressure on our opponent’s back line. A great showing for our defense as they played together for the first time; they played their hearts out. The all-around team effort was non-stop. There were a lot of positives to reflect on for our first game of the season although, with only eight returning players, we showed some inexperience in key moments. A special shout-out to our seven freshmen, who picked up solid minutes in their first outing.
