Dexter Outlasts Brunswick in One-Goal Game

Two evenly matched teams took the ice on Friday at Cushing Academy, with Dexter prevailing over Brunswick by a score of 4-3 in a game that went down to the final seconds.

The Bruins struck first on the second shift of the opening 18 minutes, as sophomore Brendan Giles finished a rebound to give his team the early lead. Juniors Eli Friedman and Lucas St. Louis, who finished with three assists on the afternoon, were in on the play.

Dexter answered with 7:53 to go in the period and looked to take the lead right before the intermission but a quick, inadvertent whistle kept things tied at one.

The second period was the difference, as Brunswick was unenergized and didn't get much going offensively, and Dexter capitalized on a broken play and a chance on the rush to take a two-goal lead into the third.

Other than a sequence of back-to-back penalties that led to a 5 v 3 goal for Dexter with five minutes remaining in the contest, the third period was all Brunswick, as the Bruins cut it to 3-2 with 15 minutes to go on junior James Shannon's power-play tally and got it back to within one on sophomore Drew DellaSalla's first as a Bruin with 50 seconds left and junior goaltender Brendan Holahan pulled.

One or two more looks at the net didn't find their way, and Dexter, a squad down 10 players due to COVID, eked out the gutsy victory.

Shots were unavailable at press time, but the Dexter goalie had a number of saves on grade-A 'Wick chances.
