Upper Schooler Earns Racial Justice Scholarship

A Brunswick senior has been recognized for his work to promote racial justice in his community and his school.

Dante White ’20 was awarded one of two Racial Justice Scholarships by the Greenwich YWCA during its 2020 Stand Against Racism event, held April 23 online.

Greenwich Academy senior Yolanda Lewis ’20, who co-founded the Civil Rights Club at GA, was the other winner.

The two were recognized for their “outstanding contributions to diversity, equity, and inclusion” in their communities and schools.

“These students are making a difference in their communities, promoting awareness around issues of discrimination and racial injustice,” said Mary Lee A. Kiernan, president and CEO of the Greenwich YWCA, at Stand Against Racism, a signature event of YWCA USA. “We congratulate them.”

White leads the Brunswick Diversity-In-Action Club, and has been involved in DIA throughout high school. He has attended a Student Diversity Leadership Conference, written for Multicultural Magazine, Orient Express, and Babble, and has volunteered at Pacific House and with special-needs children.

In his nomination, White was cited for the way he “exemplifies a person who is committed to social justice,” and the way he has “articulated his enthusiasm for improving our society to better serve racially and socially marginalized groups.”

“He is a courageous young man, with a fearlessness and zeal to tackle issues that are not the most comfortable but warranted,” said Brunswick Director of Diversity & Inclusion Alecia G. Thomas.

Reverend Dr. Thomas Nins, community outreach & co-advisor to DIA at Brunswick, cited White as an “excellent student with a disciplined, probing mind.”

“He is a servant-leader,” Nins said. “His passion and vision for diversity work has been a driving force in our community. He brings with him the one thing that cannot be located on a test, but matters most of all: He comes with integrity and a belief that the world can be a better place and that we each play a part in that process.”
