Fourteen Goal Run Propels Lacrosse Past New Canaan

Brunswick broke open an early 1-1 game with 14 straight goals, rolling past New Canaan H.S. on Cosby Field, 19-5. The Bruins, ranked third nationally, improve to 6-0 with the Friday night non-league win. Over the first six games of the season, Brunswick has outscored its opponents 90-23.

In the first quarter, following an opening goal by Brunswick’s Xander Dickson, the Rams tied the contest at 1-1 with 9:52 left in the frame.

Just over three minutes later, the Bruins started their 14-goal onslaught with a goal by Jack Ocken. Brunswick finished off the first quarter with six more goals, while tacking on another six goals in the second quarter to take a commanding 14-1 lead at intermission.

Dickson chipped in four assists in the first quarter, as a total of six Bruins netted goals. Christian Ronda and Jack Montinaro each scored twice in the frame.

During the 6-0 run in the second quarter, Montinaro scored two more goals, while Ocken, Michael Gottlieb, Dickson, and Ronda each netted their second goal of the game.

Brunswick face-off specialist Jordan Ginder won 15-16 face-offs in the half, finishing with a team-best nine groundballs.

Following a third quarter tally by Brunswick’s Cooper Moore, New Canaan ended the Brunswick run and its own 29:44 scoreless drought with a goal at the 3:08 mark of the third quarter. The Rams’ second tally of the game set the score at 15-2 in favor of the hosts.

New Canaan added two more goals in the third quarter before Brunswick’s Michael Mauricio scored his second goal of the game to close out the third.

With the home team leading 16-4 to start the fourth quarter, Dickson notched a hat-trick goal ahead of two more Brunswick markers set up by feeds from Coulter Mackesy. Tucker Slattery finished off the first Mackesy assist, while Hugo Gorman netted the second. The Rams capped the scoring with the final goal of the contest, as the Bruins won the game 19-5.

Brunswick starting goalie Patrick Burkishaw finished with eight saves, including some flashy doorstep stops, while reserve goalie Will Prout played most of the second half and made six saves for the Bruins.

The Bruins, winners of three of the last four against the Rams, return to action with a non-league game at Lawrenceville on Wednesday, April 18.
