Hockey Shatters Glass and Gunnery on Senior Night

Brunswick knocked off Gunnery, 5-1, and knocked out a pane of safety glass on Senior Night in Hartong Rink on Friday. The quality win over the Hilltoppers (14-8-2, 13-6-2) is a strong boost for the Bruins (12-9-4, 11-8-4), heading into the stretch run, as both teams have post-season aspirations.

While two schools will battle again at Gunnery, on February 18, the Bruins head to Berkshire on Saturday, February 10.

Brunswick senior Jack Forrest started the scoring in the first period with a power-play tally at 16:13.

In the opening seconds of the second period, Gunnery tied the contest at 1-1 with a quick tally.

Later in the second, a big hit near the center ice boards shattered a panel of safety glass, as play was halted at the 13:24 mark. During the delay, a number of Brunswick staff members worked exceptionally quick to clear the thousands of pieces of glass on the ice surface and the nearby seating area. The crew put in a new panel of safety glass and after about a 20 minutes total delay and a brief warm-up, the game continued.

After the delay, Brunswick pumped in a pair of goals, including another 5-on-4 tally, as Ryan St. Louis (3rd goal) lit the lamp just 21 seconds after play resumed. Senior co-captain Ryan Carmichael earned an assist on the go-ahead goal. In the closing seconds of the frame, Patrick Burkinshaw gave the Bruins a 3-1 cushion, as the senior netted his first goal of the season with 46 seconds left.

In the third period, Brunswick’s Cooper Moore notched his fifth goal of the season, as the Bruins took a commanding 4-1 lead at the 7:44 mark.

In the closing minutes, with Gunnery on the power play, the Hilltoppers pulled their goalie to create a 6-on-4 situation for Brunswick to defend. The Bruins admirably protected their own net and managed to score a rare short-handed, empty-net goal in the process.

On the final scoring play, senior co-captain Christian LeSueur picked up a pass from classmate Nick Boardman at the red line and skated to the right circle, before depositing the puck for his 12th goal and team-leading 31st point.

On the night, Brunswick goalie Dan Dachille stopped 29 of 30 shots.

Gunnery 0 1 0 = 1
Bruins    1 2 2 = 5
