Soccer Shuts Out Pomfret

Brunswick netted a goal in each half against Pomfret to earn a 2-0 win on Wednesday at neutral site Choate Rosemary Hall. Brunswick outshot the Griffins 9-4 on the day.

The Bruins (5-6-1) pressured Pomfret from the start, as Jack Withstandley, Nick Boardman, and Christian Barnard each had solid scoring chances in the first 20 minutes. All three attempts were turned away by the Pomfret goalie.

Following a free kick from the corner of the 18 in the 38th minute, Brunswick’s Stevie Lopez played a nice ball into the penalty area. After a bit of unsettled play, the ball landed on the foot of Ryan Chinai 20 yards away from the center of the goal. Chinai buried a one-time shot, top left, for the 1-0 lead.

In the second half, the Bruins tacked on an insurance goal in the 78th minute, when substitute goalie Harry Barringer played a clearance out of his box that landed on the foot of AJ Delgado. Delgado bested two Pomfret defenders on the way to the goal, tucking in a scoring shot against the Griffins’ keeper.

Brunswick's Eric Meindl got his second varsity start in net, playing the first 60 minutes and making four saves, including a nice stop on a potentially dangerous cross early in the second half. Barringer played the final 30 minutes for the Bruins without facing much action.
