Soccer Edged by Deerfield

Brunswick held a 1-0 lead in the second half on the road against Deerfield, but allowed a pair of late goals and fell to the hosts on Saturday by a score of 2-1.

Following a scoreless opening half, Brunswick (0-3-1) netted a quick goal to start the second half. At the 46th minute, Nick Boardman played the ball to teammate Tom Foley. Foley one-timed a pass across the goal line to a streaking Christian Barnard, who buried it on his first touch. The bang-bang play gave the Bruins a 1-0 lead.

After the Brunswick goal, Deerfield mounted continuous pressure on the Bruins’ defense. Finally, at the 77th minute, following a long throw-in by Deerfield, the hosts netted the equalizer.

Seven minutes later, Deerfield took the lead for good on a free kick from 35 yards out.

Brunswick countered in the waning minutes of play, but couldn’t score the tying goal.

Brunswick goalie Harry Barringer had another busy day, making eight saves in front of the Bruins’ net.

Both teams earned quality scoring chances in the opening frame. Brunswick’s best scoring opportunity came in the opening minutes, as Boardman pushed the ball to Stevie Lopez, who took on the Deerfield keeper one-on-one, but the shot sailed just wide right of the post. Deerfield’s chance came on a penalty kick, but Barringer stopped the PK and made a second save on the rebound.
