Tennis Collects Second Straight FAA Title for Coach Abraham

Brunswick topped RCDS by a 5-2 score on Monday, finishing the FAA segment of the season undefeated. In two seasons at Brunswick, tennis coach Ryan Abraham has an appropriately tennis-friendly mark of 6-0 and 6-0 in FAA action, winning back-to-back FAA team titles in the process.

Reflecting on his two FAA seasons, Abraham noted the legacy at Brunswick: “I took over a strong program. Having a talented 16-member team allowed me to be versatile with the lineups during the FAA season.”

Owning a deep roster is beneficial in FAA play, as each team sends 10 players to the court for simultaneous action in seven matches. The teams play a 4-3 format, with four singles matches and three doubles matches played all played at the same time.

In Monday’s RCDS contest, the Bruins won straight-set matches at #1 doubles and #3 and #4 singles, giving the hosts a 3-2 lead. The final two matches, at #1 and #2 singles, each reached the third and deciding set.

Both Bruins, #1 Willie Turchetta and #2 Ben Powis, dropped their opening set, but rallied to win their respective second set by matching 6-1 scores. Turchetta rolled to victory (6-0) in the third set, as Powis won his match, 6-4.

The Bruins (9-2) have one more match on Wednesday, May 10, at Taft before the FAA Individual Tournament at Hopkins on Monday, May 15. The FAA Tournament allows each school to send two singles players and two doubles tandems to the event.

Following the FAA’s, the team will head to the New England (NEITA) Championships. The location for the two-day event, beginning on Saturday, May 21, has yet to be determined.
