Crew Preview

Head coach Joe Falco, entering his 19^th year at the helm of the crew team, will be looking for some his of younger rowers to step into a number of vital roles this spring. It is a rite of passage for the experienced coach, as the fall season and off-season training helps counter the annual graduation of excellent Bruins every spring.

 

While a majority of the members of the 10-4 first varsity boat last year graduated, taking plenty of medals and a memorable finish at the 2016 Royal Henley Regatta with them, Falco and his coaches believe in the emerging talent of the returning members of the 2017 team.

Senior captains Alex Wada and Tate Huffman, along with veteran classmate and coxswain Alec Esmond, are featured members of the 2017 squad. Esmond, in fact, is the lone returning member of the Bruins’ 2016 Henley Regatta entry. Sitting in the driver’s seat of the shell as the coxswain, Esmond will bring experience and poise that will prove vital to the growth of the 2017 team.

 

Practice and preparation for the team starts at the Falco Rowing Center, near the mouth of the Mianus River. As the coaches and rowers attest, rarely are there true upsets on the water. Results in rowing are based on training, teamwork, and trust.

 

Helping the transition from last year’s veteran team are four outstanding assistant coaches, including 13-year assistant John Martin. Aiding coach Martin and coach Falco are assistants Peter Costas and Dmitri Vlasov, both in their third year, and second-year coach Kathleen Myer.

 

Combining a deep roster of hard-working and enthusiastic boys with excellent coaches training at the new Falco Rowing Center, the team should be well prepared for a challenging spring schedule.

 

The Bruins starts their season with a race in New Jersey, facing eastern power Lawrenceville, on Sunday, April 2. Following a number of conference races, Brunswick will take part in the Kent Invitational on May 13, followed by the NEIRA Championships on May 27.
