Brunswick, ranked ninth in the latest prep hockey poll, topped Albany Academy in overtime on Wednesday, 2-1. Christian LeSueur netted both goals for the visiting Brunswick squad, including the game-winner with 25 seconds left in the extra session. The surging Bruins are 5-1-1 in their last seven games and stand at 15-7-4 overall.
It was the second time in 12 days the two teams played each other, as the Bruins topped the Cadets by a similar 2-1 score at the Bruins’ Hartong Rink on February 3.
Brunswick is 4-0 on the season in extra-session contests, including its last outing, a 4-3 overtime win over Berkshire four days ago. LeSueur tallied the game-winner in that OT contest as well.
Brunswick took a 1-0 lead in the first period at 2:28, when LeSueur scored his 18th goal of the season, as Nick VanBelle (19th) and Ryan Carmichael (13th) earned assists on the play.
Albany tied the game at 1-1 in the opening minute of the third period, as the teams remained knotted at one goal apiece heading into the five-minute extra session.
Following 4:30 seconds of overtime action, the Bruins created their game-winning scoring chance with some deft play by Charles Shaffer. Shaffer battled for the loose puck and connected with a cutting LeSueur (19th goal) with a spectacular pass to set-up the game-ending goal with just 25 seconds left to play.
Brunswick goalie Strauss Mann, the top-rated netminder in save percentage in prep hockey (.944), earned the win for the Bruins, making 34 saves on the day.
