Hockey Knocks Off Another Ranked Opponent

Brunswick topped eighth-ranked Albany Academy, 2-1, in front of the largest crowd of the season at Hartong Rink on Friday. The win is the third victory in eight days over a top-10 program for Brunswick (12-6-3).

Following a scoreless 48:37 of hockey, three goals were scored in the final 5:23 of action at Hartong Rink, where the Bruins are 7-0-1 this season and 27-2-2 since the start of the 2014-15 year.

After two scoreless periods, Brunswick opened the third period with a pair of goals. Co-captains Christian LeSueur (15^th) and Nick VanBelle (17^th) gave Brunswick a 2-0 lead with 1:19 left to play in the game.

LeSueur’s tally came off an Albany turnover following a face-off win by the Cadets in the Albany zone. The co-captain intercepted a cross-ice pass near the blue line and sliced into the crease, finishing with a backhand shot for a 1-0 lead to send the home fans into a frenzy at 12:37.

VanBelle gave the Bruins an insurance goal at 16:49, pumping in a doorstep tally following a shot by Charles Shaffer.

Trailing 2-0, the Cadets pulled their goalie for an extra skater in the final minute. The move paid off for Albany, as the Cadets scored a 6-on-5 goal with 11.5 seconds left.

Following a face-off win by Albany, the Cadets did get a soft shot on net, but couldn’t muster a rebound for the tying tally.

Brunswick netminder Strauss Mann put in another stellar effort in between the pipes, stopping 41 shots for the Bruins.

The two teams will meet again in Albany on February 15.
