'Wick Eclipses King in First Match of Season

The varsity golf team won its opening match of the season, 7.5-1.5, against King on a sunny Tuesday afternoon at Sterling Farms in Stamford.

Having lost seven seniors last year, the Bruins entered the season knowing that it would be a "reloading" year. The golfers, however, were determined not to let this fact hold them back from finding success against a solid King team. The squad that traveled to Sterling Farms was on the younger side – featuring four sophomores –and the underclassmen shrugged off a shaky start to the round and posted solid 9-hole scores on their way to a 182-191 win on aggregate.

Brunswick was led by its two senior captains, Will Harned (33) and James O'Connor (33), who charged ahead early by posting twin scores of three under par. O'Connor set the "business as usual" tone for the day by dunking an eagle from 80 yards on the first hole, which he acknowledged only with a tip of the cap. Harned later carded his own eagle on the par 5 sixth hole by rolling in a 40-footer from across the green.

The sophomore quartet of Jack Chung (39), Henry Graham (37), Charlie Perkins (42), and Mac Ahern (40) followed their captains with solid rounds of their own to complete the victory.

Brunswick will head up to Hotchkiss on Saturday afternoon, when they will compete in an invitational, hoping to continue their good start to the season.
