Twelve Grapplers Earn Medals at Western New Englands

Brunswick had a strong showing in taking second place among 19 teams at the 67th annual Western New England Independent School Wrestling Association (WNEISWA) Championships. In all, 12 of the 14 Bruin wrestlers placed in the top five at their respective weight classes.

Christian Yanoti '25 emerged as the lone champion for the Bruins. Yanoti, who took third in this tournament last year, continued his stellar season by pinning his way to the finals before earning a victory by decision in the first-place match.

Four other Bruins made finals but ultimately took second place: Judah Viders '27, Michael Accetta '24, Alec Harned '26, and Michael Marini '26. Viders, who was unseeded, knocked off the #2 and #3 seeds at 113 lb. to get to the finals. Co-captain Accetta notched two more pins and a dominant 7-0 decision against the #3 seed in the semi-finals. Harned continued to lead the team in wins as he pushed his win total to 27 on the season. Marini wrestled well and had some things go his way, but his run came to an end with a tough 1-0 loss by decision in the finals.

Four Bruins wrestled back in the consolation bracket to take third, earning huge points for the team. Owen Bartoszek '27 got three more wins, running his record to 24-6. Marco Sethi '27 went 4-1 and avenged a key loss from earlier in the season. Ethan Phelps '26 stepped up for his team once again, this time wrestling up a weight class and finishing above his seed. Nikki Krause '26 may have had the best tournament of any Brunswick wrestler; after losing to the #2 seed in the Round of 16, Krause, who was unseeded, rattled off five victories in a row, defeating the #3, #4, #7, #8 seeds.

Jack Degl '26 wrestled to seed in taking fourth place at the tournament's toughest weight class. Quinn McGraw '26, who is now a three-time placewinner at this tournament, took fifth place. Declan Murray '25 also took fifth place, going 4-2 including avenging an earlier season loss.
