'Wick Squash Rolls on Against Taft

On Senior Day at Stephens Squash Center, the Brunswick squash team carded its second win in as many days – this time defeating Taft by a score of 5-2.

All Brunswick seniors won in front of a nice crowd to celebrate four long standing members of the team: Will Newton, Cole Cline, Bennett Klein, and Alex DeLuca.

Klein and DeLuca both stepped up a few spots in the lineup for the exhibition matches at #8 and #9 and won 3-2 and 3-1, respectively.

Meanwhile, Newton and Cline battled their opponents on the court next door. Newton continued his stellar play from the night before against Haverford, and dispatched his Taft opponent in three games. Cline, returning to the lineup after an illness, found his game again without missing a beat and also won in three games. Another great day for the varsity squash team was made even better by the great performances from the seniors with their friends and family looking on.

The underclassmen on the team also played good squash on the way to the home victory. Henry Raine won in three games at #4 to put the Bruins within one match of sealing the day against Taft. It would be Oliver Velasco, tired from his long bout the night before, who pulled out another nail biter in five games at #3 to assure the win for Brunswick. Moments later, Thomas Carney added to the victory total at #7.

On the stadium court, Will Newman couldn't quite pull out his match at #2 and ended up falling in a five-game match that lasted over an hour. #1 player Johan Hodgson, still not 100% after Friday night's match against Haverford, lost in three games to a very talented Taft player in Eyad Awad.

The Bruins will be back in action this week, when they will host the FAA tournament on Wednesday, January 31, and Friday, February 2.
