Bruins JV Outlasts Fairfield Prep

The Bruins played through adversity on Wednesday night at the Wonderland of Ice, but proved up to the challenge by overcoming a 3-0 deficit after the first period and emerging with a 6-5 win.

Charlie Stevens helped get the momentum going for Brunswick two minutes into the second, finishing a beautiful tic-tac-toe passing play from linemates Ben Taylor and George Karayiannis.

Teddy Cooney had a laser one-timer into the upper right corner to shrink the lead to one with 5:26 left in the second, and Ryan Baxter then tied the game twenty seconds later with his first unassisted goal of the game. Senior Captain Luke Dougherty got the assist on Cooney’s goal.

Prep kept fighting back though, retaking the lead with two minutes to go in the stanza. With just 10 seconds left in the period, Paul Triggiani capitalized on a turnover in the offensive zone, firing a puck so hard it seemed to go through the upper left mesh of the goal, deflecting upwards behind the net. After some confusion by the referees and confirmation that there was in fact a tear in the netting, Brunswick was awarded the goal. 4-4 after two.

Both teams knew how big the next goal would be, but it was Fairfield Prep who scored first in the third, taking the lead for the third time in the contest. There was no quit in the Bruins players, though, and eventually Ryan Baxter put away his second to even the scoreboard at five with 6:39 in the game.

Fairfield Prep called a timeout with 2:20 on the clock, but couldn’t handle the relentless offensive pressure of the blue line, and Taylor put the Bruins up for the first time with just 1:40 left.

Brunswick had a couple of chances at an open net in the final seconds, but was happy to walk away with a well-earned comeback victory.

James Cragin saw lots of action around his net, securing several bouncing pucks that could have easily found their way behind him.

Overall, it was a gutsy team win for the Bruins, and it was great to have alums Nic Wright and Sam Case there to cheer on the squad.
