'Wick Overwhelms Salisbury in Home Opener

Brunswick's football team, believing it was far better than it had shown in its first game of this season against Cheshire, put everything together on Cosby Field for the home opener in a 49-21 win over Salisbury School on Friday night.  

 

The Bruins took it to the Crimson Knights from the outset and never let up. Quarterback Eli Cromartie threw four touchdown passes on the night. Cromartie was 11 for 15 for 270 yards in the air. His first of four touchdown passes was a six-yard pass to sophomore Matt Colella, who scampered into the endzone on the opening drive. 

 

Salisbury answered and scored on a 10-yard strike to knot the score at seven on its first drive of the night. That touchdown would be as close as the visitors would come to Brunswick.

 

Brunswick wasted no time and answered the call on the ensuing kickoff. Brunswick captain and defensive back Hudson Hausmann left no doubt and returned the Salisbury kick 80 yards for his first of the season. At the end of the first quarter, the score was 14-7 and the Bruins never looked back.

 

Running back Bryce Davis took over the ground game and rushed for 173 yards. Cromartie and Davis were dominant in their performances. Brunswick’s next drive saw Cromartie target junior Tyler Lloyd on two plays in a row that covered 55 yards and ended in a 29-yard touchdown reception for Lloyd on the first play of the second quarter.

 

After that, the second quarter belonged to junior receiver William Fels. Fels scored the next two touchdowns on receptions over the course of 12 minutes prior to halftime. His first was a 46-yard pass from Cromartie and, not to be outdone, his second was a 58-yard catch to see the Bruins go into halftime with a 35-14 lead.  

 

The Bruins used the pass to spread out the defense and build an early lead. Then, they were able to "run to win," to chew up the clock, and impose their will on the Crimson Knights over the final two quarters. Davis and junior running back Patrick Hiebert each scored second half touchdowns to pad the lead that the Bruins amassed in the first half.  

 

The Brunswick defense, meanwhile, limited Salisbury to nine rushing yards, but allowed Salisbury’s offense to throw for 325 yards and seven points in each of the first three quarters.

 

After such a strong showing by so many, the Bruins are now preparing for a tough Deerfield team, which will be coming to Cosby field for a 5 p.m. kickoff next Saturday, September 30.
