Seven Wrestlers Earn All-New England

Seven Brunswick wrestlers were awarded All-New England status by earning spots on the podium at the 2023 New England Preparatory School Wrestling Association (NEPSWA) Championships hosted by Phillips Academy (Andover) on Saturday.

Brunswick brought ten wrestlers to the two-day tournament. All six Brunswick wrestlers who had earned seeds going into the tournament wrestled to or above seed, leading Brunswick to a 6th place finish as a team.

At 126 lb., Patrick O’Donahue ’25 was seeded 8th and took an impressive 3rd place. After an opening round win and then a loss to the #1 seed in the quarterfinals, O’Donahue rattled off four straight wins against opponents from Deerfield, Hotchkiss (#4 seed), NMH (#2 seed), and Choate (#5 seed). O’Donahue, who took 5th place last year, will be making his second trip to the National Prep Wrestling Championships.

Michael Accetta ’24 provided one of the highlights of the entire tournament by pinning his nationally-ranked opponent from NMH in the consolation semi-finals. Accetta, who was seeded 5th at 132 lb., took 4th place and earned a trip to Nationals.

Carlo Tucci ’26 was the lone Bruin semi-finalist. Tucci, the #5 seed at 157 lb., earned a place in the highly competitive semis by knocking off the #4 seed from GFA who had beaten Tucci twice in the season including in the finals of the WNEISWA Championships the previous weekend. Tucci ended up taking 4th and will be making his first trip to Nationals.

Co-captain Tomas Delgado ’23, Enzo Vera ’23, and Christian Yanoti ’25 each earned 6th place finishes and qualified for Nationals. Delgado, seeded #8 at 190 lb., had key victories over the #9 seed from Lawrence Academy and later in the tournament avenged a loss from earlier in the season to the #5 seed from Exeter. Vera wrestled to his #6 seed at 138 lb. highlighted by a pin over the #7 seed from St. Paul’s. Yanoti, unseeded at 106 lb., earned key wins over opponents from Avon and Thayer.

At 150 lb., Jack Degl ’25 had an impressive tournament and wrestled to his #7 seed. Degl had solid wins over wrestlers from Portsmouth Abbey and Pomfret, while losing a 1-0 decision to the WNEISWA champion. Co-captain William MacGillivray ’23 was hurt in warm-ups on Saturday morning, but gritted through his injury, eventually losing in overtime. Whip Gorman ’24 wrestled up a weight class and was eliminated with an 8-4 loss by decision, while Quinn McGraw ’26 had a tough draw, losing to the #5 and #6 seeds in succession.
