'Wick Wins NEPSAC Football Championship

Brunswick scored two fourth-quarter touchdowns to stymie a Choate comeback bid and ultimately defeated the Wild Boars, 33-21, to win the Mike Silipo NEPSAC Class A Bowl on Saturday in Wallingford. 
 
The Bruins built a 20-point lead in the first half on the strength of senior DB Luke Michalik’s pick-six, two Oliver Reynolds field goals, and a 57-yard scoring connection between junior QB Elijah Cromartie and senior WR Tomas Delgado.
 
Choate, undefeated at 8-0 coming into the game, didn’t go away and cut the lead to 20-6 before halftime. 
 
The hosts took a one-point advantage on their third-straight TD with 6:28 remaining in the third quarter — setting the stage for ’Wick’s fourth-quarter heroics. 
 
Junior RB Bryce Davis capped the game-winning drive with 2:53 to go in the contest on a 22-yard TD run — and then Davis sealed the victory with a 42-yard TD run in the final minute. 
 
Senior Miles Walker, junior Matthew Augustine, senior Will Janis, junior Jadon LaFontant, junior Patrick O’Connor, and junior EJ Perez had yet another strong game on the offensive line to spark the Bruins’ running and passing attack. 
 
Key defensive plays came from junior defensive end Liam Butler, sophomore defensive back Ethan Long, junior defensive back Hudson Hausmann, senior defensive back Jackson Wolfram, and senior defensive end Taylor Primack.
 
The win put the finishing touches on an outstanding 9-1 season for the Bruins, a 2022 campaign in which they won their final nine games.
 
“I’m so proud of the boys,” said first-year Brunswick coach Wayne McGillicuddy. “They played so hard and never quit. They stared adversity in the face and never backed down.”
