Varsity Soccer Preview: Young Squad Set To Compete
With nine returning players and 14 new additions to the squad, the Brunswick varsity soccer team will kick off its season on Wednesday, September 14, when the Bruins host Choate in their first contest on Carroll Field.
Head coach Danny Simpson, along with assistants Jon Kaptcianos and Chris Forester, is optimistic about this year’s group after a productive two weeks of pre-season training, which included a five-day training camp at the school’s Randolph, Vt., campus — in addition to competitive friendlies against strong FCIAC squads Westhill and Brien McMahon.
Seniors Douglas Otton and Malik Samms will serve as co-captains, bringing a wealth of experience to their respective defensive and offensive positions.
“They are clearly up for the challenge of uniting and bringing this younger squad together in preparation for another highly competitive WNEPSSA season,” coach Kaptcianos said.
“Our goal is always to be playing meaningful games come November and working towards a NEPSAC playoff bid,” the longtime assistant coach said. “We are excited to see how this group continues to form as a team in the upcoming weeks.”
The Bruins will host the likes of Taft, Deerfield, South Kent, and Westminster — in addition to their Homecoming contest against Frederick Gunn School — throughout the fall season on Carroll Field at the Middle School.
