Brunswick Takes Down Tough Collegiate Team

Wrestling at New York State weights, the Bruin wrestlers defeated a depleted by scrappy Collegiate squad today at home.

The New York system includes only 13 weight classes at slightly different intervals than the National High School Federation system used by New England schools. Collegiate gave up forfeits in five weight classes, but wrestled tough in the remaining bouts, with the teams trading wins back and forth. Brunswick’s depth and the ability to win by pin helped ensure the victory.

Freshman Christian Yanotti (102 lbs.) and eighth grader Quinn McGraw (110 lbs.) opened the match with forfeit wins, staking the Bruins to a 12-0 lead. Freshman Patrick O’Donahue, wrestling in the 118 lbs. weight class, was pinned in the first period. Sophomore Carter Bagaria (126 lbs.) also suffered a loss by pin, tying the team score at 12-12. Junior Enzo Vera at 132 lbs. stopped the bleeding with a gutsy 9-6 decision to take a 15-12 lead, and the Bruins never looked back.

Captain Kyle Karas (138 lbs.) pinned his opponent. Sophomore Kyle Pagnani (145 lbs.) lost a decision 3-8, but senior Kaden Saad outlasted his opponent and scored a late reversal to win a 4-3 decision. Junior Will MacGillivaray (160 lbs.) was pinned late in the third period, but captain Will Donovan (172 lbs.) answered with a quick pinned of his opponent. Junior Tomas Delgado (189 lbs.), senior Michael Neviera (215 lbs.), and captain Cliff Belknap (285 lbs.) all took forfeit wins to close out the match at 48-21.

Brunswick is scheduled to host the rescheduled Fairchester Athletic Association dual tournament on Saturday at Burke Field House.
