Two More Bruins Sign NCAA National Letters of Intent
In recognition of their athletic prowess, two senior Brunswick student-athletes signed National Letters of Intent (NLI) on Wednesday. In return for athletic-scholarship aid, Jalen Madison and Howard Powell are committing to play football for Sacred Heart University.
Madison, the Erickson League’s Offensive Player of the Year, and Howard Powell, the Erickson League’s Co-Defensive Player of the Year, led Brunswick (8-2, 6-1) to a runner-up finish in Erickson League and a victory in the NEPSAC’s Todd Marble Bowl.
The duo, both from Stratford, Conn., earned All-Erickson League and All-NEPSAC Class A accolades in 2019.
From the tailback position, Madison led the potent Brunswick ground game this season with career highs in rushing yards (1,376) and touchdowns (18). Madison, an All-Erickson selection in 2018, ran for a season-high 261 yards against Taft and rushed for a career-best five touchdowns against Williston Northampton this season.
Powell was a two-way force for Brunswick. Beyond paving the way for a Brunswick offense that averaged 192.1 yards/game rushing as a guard, Powell dominated the trenches as a defensive tackle. Also tabbed as an All-Erickson player last year, Powell collected 52 total tackles and led the team in tackles for loss (16) and sacks (7) in 2019. Powell anchored a defense that held opponents to just 90.2 yards/game rushing.
Along with Madison and Powell, three other Brunswick student-athletes signed NLI scholarship agreements in November. Luca Errico will attend the University of Virginia to wrestle, Brody Firestein selected Penn State University for lacrosse, while teammate Liam Fairback decided on Colgate University.
