Trailing 17-0 in the third quarter on the road at Salisbury, Brunswick scored 20 unanswered points en route to an impressive comeback win, 20-17. With the victory, the Bruins improve to 5-1 overall and 3-0 in Erickson League action.
Leading 7-0 after the first quarter, Salisbury (3-2, 2-2) scored 10 more points in the second quarter, as the Knights took a 17-0 lead into the half.
Brunswick mounted its comeback, scoring a touchdown on the opening drive of the third quarter. Following a 35-yard kick return by Kevonne Wilder, the Bruins opened the second half on the 50-yard line. Six plays later, quarterback Nicky Winegardner tossed a 29-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Bernard Zoungrana on a fourth down play. Placekicker Chris Chavez added the extra-point, as the Bruins trailed 17-7 with 9:17 remaining in the third quarter.
The Brunswick defense held the Knights in check throughout the third quarter, forcing a punt on Salisbury’s two possessions. Following a punt by the Knights to open the fourth quarter, the Bruins’ offense took over on their own 42-yard line.
Brunswick mounted a six-play scoring drive, keyed by a 22-yard run by Winegarder. Immediately after the big gain, running back Jalen Madison posted a powerful 18-yard touchdown run. Chavez’s extra-point kick was blocked, as the Bruins trailed 17-13 with 9:07 left in the game.
The Brunswick defense forced a Salisbury punt after a quick three-and-out series. On the Bruins’ punt return, Wilder caught the ball on the Knights’ 49 and scampered 37 yards to Salisbury’s 12-yard line.
Two plays later, Winegardner connected with Zoungrana on a touchdown pass in the back of the end zone to give the Bruins their first lead of the game. Chavez added the extra-point kick, as Brunswick led 20-17 with 6:34 to play.
Salisbury mounted a late comeback, driving 38 yards down to the Brunswick 33-yard line. The Bruins defense stiffened on the next four plays, as Lucas Delgado sacked the Knight’s quarterback on fourth down to end the Salisbury drive.
