Leyton Borcherding Sails to Bronze at European Championship
Brunswick’s Leyton Borcherding, along with skipper Max Anker, took third place in the U-17 class at the 2017 Open 420 European Championships in Athens, Greece. During the six-day, 12-race championship, the Americans picked up a pair of first place finishes, collecting a total of 94 points, as the winning boat from Italy sailed away from the fleet with 62 points.
The American duo, winners of the U.S. title in June, was the lone non-European entry in the 45-boat field. The tandem had six top-10 finishes and never placed below 20th in any race.
Over the 12-race format, with each using 420-class crafts, scoring is based on finishing position. The better a boat finishes in each race, the lower the score for the competitor.
Following an impressive finish in their first international competition, Borcherding and Anker are currently representing Team USA at the Junior European Championships in Italy.
