Brunswick had a banner day for its rowing program on Sunday in Philadelphia. Both the Varsity and Second Varsity Eights won gold medals at the Head of the Schuylkill Regatta.
The Varsity Eight are now back-to-back champions of the event after winning in 2014. The finishing time of 12:56.9 outpaced the second place crew from Winchester (UK) by more than 13 seconds. The crew rowed with great confidence, besting 61 other boats on the historic course.
Senior co-captain Will Powers noted, “We raced aggressively the whole way down the course, despite starting from the back of the pack.”
The Second Varsity Eight added to the Brunswick medal haul by taking top honors against 62 other entries in its division, winning by 14 seconds. The rowers finish their fall campaign with three victories and one second place finish at four fall regattas.
Brunswick’s Third Eight took 16th of 62 in the same division as Second Varsity, showing the impressive depth of this year’s squad. Senior Duke Guadalupe provided valuable leadership and experience from the stroke seat.
The Freshmen Eight took seventh out of 47 boats in the Novice Eight category. The Bruins raced the entire 2.5 mile course without bringing the stroke rate below 34 strokes per minute -- an impressive effort.
