'Wick Tops Malvern in National LAX Showdown

Brunswick won its second straight game to open the lacrosse season, topping Malvern Prep (Pa.) by a score of 10-7 on the road on Thursday afternoon.

Going into the game, the Bruins were ranked No. 1 and the Friars sat at No. 12 per national rankings by Inside Lacrosse.

Malvern got off to a quick start, going up 3-0, but ’Wick battled back to trail by only one goal after the first quarter.

Both teams showed their athleticism and physicality throughout the contest.

Once ’Wick cleaned up some sloppiness with the ball and saw a few shots hit the back of the net, the visitors began to hit their stride and maintained a minimum of a two-goal lead for most of the remainder of the game.

In the fourth quarter, Malvern put the pressure back on by scoring two goals and bringing it to an 8-7 game.

But the Bruins bounced back and clinched the victory after a strong ride, a Friars’ turnover, and a Max Warden ’24 fast-break goal on the doorstep.

The Bruins’ coaching staff noted the play of senior tri-captain and Princeton recruit Hunter Spiess, who tallied six ground balls, forced a number of turnovers, and played sound one-one-one team defense.

Brunswick will host Deerfield on Saturday at 3 p.m. on Cosby Field.
