Brunswick’s hockey season came to an end on Saturday, as third-seeded Loomis Chaffee ousted the second-seeded Bruins in the semifinals of the NEPSIHA Martin/Earl Large School Tournament in Hartong Rink, 5-2. The loss finishes the season for the Bruins (21-8-2), while the Pelicans advance to the tourney finals at Trinity College on Sunday.
Brunswick’s John Burdett netted the first goal of the game on a blast from the blue line in the first period. Burdett’s tally was the defenseman’s first-ever goal as a Bruin.
Later in the opening frame, with Brunswick on a power-play, Loomis Chaffee netted a shorthanded goal to knot the contest a 1-1 with just under two minutes remaining.
The Pelicans took command of the contest with a trio of second period goals, including the final marker with 1.1 seconds left in the period.
Trailing 4-1 in the third period, the Bruins closed the gap on a 6-on-4 power-play, as Beanie Richter’s tally made it a two-goal contest with under three minutes left in the game.
Less than a minute later, with Brunswick goalie Alexander Rohlf pulled for an extra skater, Loomis Chaffee potted an empty-net goal to give the visitors a three-goal advantage (5-2) with 2:02 remaining in the contest.
