Brunswick scored 12 runs in the first two innings against FAA foe St. Luke’s, as the Bruins rolled to a decisive 13-2 road win on Monday in five innings. The league-opening win gives Brunswick a 2-0 overall mark and a 1-0 record in conference play.
Twenty-one batters stepped to the plate in the opening two innings, as the Bruins collected seven hits, drew four walks and were hit by a pitch three times and reached base on an error once.
Jake Hyde drove in the first run of the game with a single with the bases loaded in the first inning. After Jack Mathews drew a bases-loaded walk, Luke Fisher drove in a pair of runs with a single to center. With a 4-0 lead an no outs, Marc McGuire followed with a single to re-load the bases, as Nick Giannuzzi’s ground-out scored Mathews from third base. Cole Mascolo capped the first-inning scoring with a two-run double to left to give the Bruins a 7-0 lead.
After the hosts scored a run in the bottom of the first, Brunswick blew the game wide open with five runs in the second inning. A one-out, bases-loaded walk by Giannuzzi started the scoring for the Bruins. Mascolo stepped to the plate and cleared the bases with a three-run triple to right field giving the Bruins an 11-1 lead. Brunswick added the final run of the frame on a two-out, first-and-third base double-steal.
Leading 12-1 in the fourth inning, Leo Socci’s bases-loaded walk capped the Brunswick scoring, as St. Luke’s scored an unearned run in the bottom of the frame.
Fisher had a 3-for-4 day including a triple and two RBI, as Mascolo went 2-for-2 with a double and a triple while collecting five RBI. McGuire chipped in with two singles and two runs, as Giannuzzi added two RBI.
Starting pitcher Joseph Henry (1-0) earned the win, tossing 3.2 innings and striking out six batters while surrendering one earned run. Fisher came in relief for the final 1.1 innings, collecting a pair of strikeouts.
