Prize-Winning Author: Success in ‘Science of Habit’

Brunswick Parent Programs welcomed Charles Duhigg — Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter and author of Smarter Faster Better and The Power of Habit— to Baker Theater for a presentation on Tuesday, December 11.

Duhigg, who studied history at Yale University and received his MBA from Harvard Business School, spent a decade as a reporter for The New York Times, where his work on the series “The iEconomy” earned him a Pulitzer Prize for explanatory reporting in 2013.

He’s also written for The New York Times Magazine, The New Yorker, and The Atlantic.

Duhigg’s interactive lecture explored the science of habit, with an eye toward motivation, productivity, and innovation in the lives of parents and their children.

“If you can help your kids feel in control of their own lives, then you can help them succeed,” he said. “And this is miserably hard because they are surrounded by things that are out of their control.

“But if we can somehow teach them how the habits in their own lives work — if we can teach them to give themselves emotional rewards and that anyone can be creative by taking old ideas and mixing them together — we can make them feel like they have mastery.

“And once they have that, they’re bound to succeed.”
