'Wick Squash Wins National Championship

Top-seeded Brunswick ‘A’ won the Division 1 Justi Cup at the 2018 HEAD U.S. High School Team Championships on Sunday at the Philadelphia Cricket Club, beating #2 Haverford, 5-2. It is the third-straight time the two teams have met in the Justi Cup finals, as the teams split the past two titles.

Earlier in the day on Sunday, the Brunswick ‘B’ team beat Hotchkiss in the Division 1 consolation finals, 4-3, to finish ninth overall in the tournament of over 100 teams.

Longtime Brunswick head coach Jim Stephens reflected moments after the championship win.

“Haverford had a great team. They were the toughest team we played all year,” said Stephens. “Our captains, Max [Finkelstein], Will [Holey] and Patrick [Feeley], were great all tournament. They were a big boost to the team in the finals.”

The Bruins previously won titles in 2015 and 2016, as Brunswick has made 11 finals appearances since the tournament inception back in 2004.

In Brunswick’s seventh-straight finals appearance, the Bruins (12-0) dropped the opening match at #7, but won the next two contests at #2 and #5.

Haverford (9-3) countered to win at #3, tying the championship battle at 2-2.

Dana Santry gave Brunswick a momentum-changing win at #6, as Santry shrugged off a two-game deficit to rally to win the final three games for a come-from-behind 3-2 win. Santry’s victory boosted Brunswick to a 3-2 overall lead.

At #1, Brunswick’s Max Finkelstein was pushed to five games by his Haverford counterpart, but the Bruins tri-captain won his match and clinched the national championship with a 3-2 win. It was Finkelstein’s second Justi Cup clinching match, as the senior beat Haverford in 2016 as the #4 player.

A minute after the winning result at #1, Nick Spizzirri capped the championship with a three-game sweep at #4 to give the Bruins a 5-2 win.

Brunswick reached the championship following three straight 7-0 wins. The Bruins beat Shipley (Pa.) in the first round, McDonogh in the quarterfinals, and #4 Episcopal in the semifinals.
