Former Bruins John Hayden and Kevin Shattenkirk Battle in NHL Game

Former Brunswick hockey players John Hayden and Kevin Shattenkirk matched up in a recent NHL game in Chicago. Hayden, a second-year pro, is a forward for the Chicago Blackhawks, while Shattenkirk, entering his eighth NHL season, is a defenseman for the New York Rangers.

In the contest, the two former Bruins battled on the ice during a number of shifts, as Hayden scored an impressive rebound goal with Shattenkirk on his hip. The Blackhawks won the game, 6-3.

Current Brunswick hockey coach Ron VanBelle, who coached Hayden and missed Shattenkirk by just one season, was excited to see the duo playing on NHL ice.

“It never gets old to see Brunswick kids, in so many walks of life, continue to put in the work and excel at the highest level," VanBelle said. "Watching that game proves to our current players that you can reach your goals on and off the ice.”

The Rangers and Blackhawks, two of the NHL’s original six hockey teams, will face off one more time in the regular season on January 3 at Madison Square Garden.
