The last two remaining unbeaten teams in the Erickson League battled on Cosby Field on Saturday, as Avon Old Farms (6-0, 6-0) pulled away from the Bruins (4-2, 4-1) in a Homecoming showdown, 36-17.
Following a physical but scoreless first half, the Bruins opened the second half with a six-play, 70-yard drive, keyed by a 35-yard run by Michael Gottlieb (6 rushes, 55 yards) to start the offensive series. Quarterback Nick Henkel (12/23, 206 yards, 2 TD) finished the drive with a 19-yard touchdown toss to Harrison Caponiti (5 rec., 52 yards). The extra-point kick by Chris Chavez gave the hosts a 7-0 lead at 9:57 in the third quarter.
Avon Old Farms countered with a quick touchdown, but the extra-point was blocked, as the Bruins held a 7-6 lead.
The Winged Beavers scored on their next two possessions, building a 20-7 advantage with 4:04 remaining in the quarter.
Brunswick answered with a Chavez field goal from 37-yards out, finishing off a short drive keyed by a 28-yard kick return by Kevonne Wilder.
Holding a 20-10 lead heading into the fourth quarter, Avon Old Farms added another pair of touchdowns to build a 36-10 lead with 4:56 left to play in the game.
After the Winged Beavers final touchdown, the Bruins scored on their first play from scrimmage. On the scoring play, Henkel, scrambling to his right, found Sean Amill on a short crossing route before being taken to the ground by a pair of defenders at the Bruins’ 30-yard line.
Amill took the unorthodox pass at the Bruins’ 35-yard line and sprinted 65 more yards to pay dirt. Amill used a key block by fellow receiver Cornelius Johnson down the sideline, sidestepping one defender before stiff-arming another defender on his way to the end zone.
The Brunswick touchdown and Chavez extra-point were the final points of the contest.
The Bruins defense collected several tackles for loss (TFL) on the day, as linebacker Nick Villis paced the Brunswick defense with 12 tackles and one TFL. Defensive back Matt Restieri added eight stops and one TFL.
Brunswick returns to action on Cosby Field on Saturday, November 4, hosting Trinity-Pawling (4-2, 4-1) at 7:00 p.m.
