Water Polo Completes 4-0 Run in California
Following a win on Friday, Brunswick capped its trip to California with three more victories on Saturday. The 4-0 run on the West Coast gives the Bruins an impressive 17-2 overall mark.
On Saturday the Bruins topped host Monte Vista 12-5, before dispatching the Harker School (19-6) and capping their trip with a resounding 14-3 victory over Mountain View.
Monte Vista, one of the stronger programs in northern California, kept the game close in the early going, but the Bruins proved to be the stronger and faster team. Brunswick’s Keegan Drew scored an opening goal, and Simon Derby and Thacher Scannell added tallies to build a 3-1 lead. Monte Vista trimmed the deficit to 3-2 before Derby blew the game wide open with five straight goals en route to the 15-5 win. Derby led the Bruins with six goals, while Scannell added four tallies. Drew and Nico Apostolides each chipped in solo markers, while Brunswick goalie Christian Hartch made a dozen saves.
Against Harker, the Bruins quickly took over the game, building an 11-0 lead and eventually cruising to the 19-6 win. Kyle Yelensky led the Bruins with five goals, as Drew, Apostolides, Jake Charney, Timmy Saunders, and Gavin Molloy each netted a pair of goals. Derby, Scannell, Peter Mullen, and Tate Robinson also added single goals, while Hartch made six saves.
In the final contest Brunswick faced another strong opponent in Mountain View. Similar to the previous contests against the other California foes, team speed and crisp passing gave the Bruins the edge, as Brunswick won by double-digits, 14-3. Scannell, Drew, and Yelensky all scored three goals apiece, while Apolstolides netted two more for the Bruins. Derby, Saunders, and Danny Taylor each added a goal, as Hartch added nine more saves to his collection.
