In Memoriam: A. Macdonald Caputo

A. Macdonald Caputo, 76, Brunswick parent, former chairman of the Board of Trustees, and visionary leader in shepherding the School into and through construction of the Edwards Campus on King Street, died Saturday, September 30.

Mr. Caputo, father of Mac Jr. ’98 and Scott ’01, served as a member of the Board of Trustees from 1991–2001 and as chairman from 1995–2001.

Mr. Caputo was a graduate of Deerfield Academy in 1959 and the University of Virginia in 1963.

“Mac was the inspiration, vision, and driving force behind the original King Street campus and served to move Brunswick into the ranks of the finest independent schools in this nation,” Headmaster Thomas W. Philip said.

“He was an inclusive and powerful force in all with which he was involved — from Deerfield Academy, to the University of Virginia, to Brunswick School. A broad and diverse spectrum of our community is forever indebted to this remarkable man.”

The Caputo name graces the Brunswick Middle School, reflecting the family’s effort to grow the institution into the school it is today.

And, in 2017, for the first time, Brunswick honored a graduating senior with the A. Macdonald Caputo Award, given to the boy who has consistently demonstrated a love for Brunswick through well-rounded leadership and uncommon generosity and kindness to others.

A memorial service will be held at St. Bartholomew's Episcopal Church at 325 Park Avenue (between 50th & 51st street) on Thursday, October 12, at 2 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, the family is accepting donations to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research.
