Brunswick dropped a 35-14 decision to Cheshire Academy on Friday night at Cosby Field in front of a capacity crowd. The game was a rematch of the 2016 Wayne Sanborn NEPSAC Championship game, which saw Cheshire win 45-20. The Bruins (1-1) return to Erickson League action on Saturday, October 7, when they host Kent.
Cheshire (3-0) jumped out to an early 21-0 lead. The Cats, using an impressive rushing attack, scored touchdowns on their first three possessions before Brunswick answered with a second quarter touchdown.
On the Bruins’ scoring drive, quarterback Nick Henkel connected with wide receiver Cornelius Johnson (three catches, 48 yards) on deep ball for a 39-yard touchdown with just over a minute left in the half.
Leading 21-7 to start the second half, Cheshire extended its lead with touchdowns in the third and fourth quarters to take a commanding 35-7 lead.
Brunswick countered with a scoring drive, keyed by a 41-yard kickoff return by Kevonne Wilder. Henkel (14/25, 209 yards) capped the drive with a 25-yard touchdown toss to Sean Amill (four receptions, 66 yards) to set the final score at 35-14.
This was the first Friday night game at Cosby Field since 2013.
