End-of-Half Goals Down Soccer

A goal by visiting Avon Old Farms in the final minute of each half was the difference, as Brunswick dropped a 2-0 decision on Wednesday on Caputo Field.

Brunswick’s Eric Meindl earned the start in goal for the Bruins and picked up a quick save on a diving stop in the opening minutes of action. Meindl finished with nine saves for Brunswick.

The Bruins (0-4-1) had a pair of quality scoring chances in the first frame. Nick Boardman’s attack from the end line resulted in an acrobatic save by the Avon Old Farms keeper in the 11th minute.

The second Brunswick opportunity came with less than two minutes remaining in the half on a free kick from 25 yards away. Boardman launch a beautiful bending shot around the defensive wall that clanked the post. Following the free kick, the ball bounced to an Avon Old Farms player and the Winged Beavers mounted a crisp counter-attack, resulting in a goal with just 30 seconds left in the half.

In a back and forth second half, Brunswick earned another pair of quality chances, this time to tie the game. A crossing pass from Boardman to Henry Foster was stuffed by the Avon Old Farms keeper in the 71st minute, while nine minutes later, Foster broke through the Winged Beaver defense but was turned back on another stop by the visiting goalie.

In the 89th and final minute of play, Avon Old Farms tacked on an insurance goal, netting a shot just under the crossbar to seal the 2-0 win.

The Bruins travel to Gunnery for a Saturday, September 30, showdown at 2:30 p.m.
